That I would still be here 3 years later! ;)
I do wish I knew more about lesson planning, learning styles, and teaching techniques. Don't get me wrong, the training that I had was amazing and did give me the information I needed about these things, but I have found that the only way to truly aquire this knowledge and feel comfortable with tutoring is through practice. (Though, watching the Great Start 5 training videos 8+ times did help...) So if there was some way, maybe by osmosis, to gain tutoring experience before actually tutoring, I would have naturally been more comfortable. As this, of couse, isn't possible, I do wish I had at least had some solid adult tutoring experience before stepping up to be a literacy coodinator. However, I am greatful to have had this "immersion" experience. I really feel now that I can handle most anything that is thrown my way. ...except for maybe hungry sharks...I'm not too sure about those yet...

As you all may know by now, I will no longer be working at the Brawley library/literacy as of September 11, 2009. I will be moving to the Los Angeles area to attend UCLA. I wanted to tell you all thank you again for your friendship. I have learned many things from each of you and am glad for the opportunity to work together on various projects. Until my position is filled, Rocio and Susan will be coordinating together on the literacy functions. Any questions can be forwarded to them. I will also continue to be available via email or phone if you have any questions. I am excited to go, but sad to leave my friends. Thank you again and see you at the picnic in October!

So here are some things that we should probably cover suring the meeting:
1. Budget (including update from Crystal and Norma about Prop 10) 2. Venue (Is it reserved? If not, how do we do so and who will do it?) 3, Food and Drinks (what are we serving? How are we getting it? How much will it cost? How will we distribute it) 4. Entertainment (inluding jump houses, DJ, Treehouse train...?) 5. Prizes (what will they be? where will we get them? how will we distribute them?) 6. Literacy Information (how will we present materials about literacy and our program? Will we be honoring our volunteers?) 7. Invites (who do we need to invite? Will we be sending handwritten invitations? how will we divy up the invites? When do they need to go out?)
Thats all I have for now. You?

"Alina, you really have all the stuff down for the event, but I would appreciate it if you would also include in the meeting the recruitment campaign, so that Wayne can provide updates on what we are doing and we can nail down who is doing what for that as well.
Thanks. Connie" ...About a media/recruitment campaign...I will be adding a flyer to the LAMBS' parent component about LEARN and the services...these parent components are for the parents/caregivers at each center that the LAMBS visits...this is in hopes of enrolling more learners with children 0-5

My notes from the meeting don't say much about what we wanted in this. So, what do we want in this? Do we just want a list of formatting and style rules or do we want more? For instance, do we need a "how to use a wiki" section for the learners? Ideas please.

yes, I think a basic "how to..." would be great for learners--maybe with some pictures/ screen shots included. A style and formating guide would also be useful, just to keep a uniform feel throughout the site. (like what we talked about with my schedule) As for notes from the meeting, I don't have any specifics either...I think we mentioned it, but didn't go into detail.

I take it the next meeting will be devoted entirely to the Lit Fair. So I'll start. . .
*Call Imperial Parks and Rec- I will do this, but I just want to make sure the date is set. *Don't forget to remind me to call the city and/or Imperial's finest to block the street. . . *Health card- We're going to be serving food, so we might not want to forget about this one. . . *Invitations- We need to cordially invite some people/businesses such as the chambers of commerce, Economic Development Corporation (EDD), city officials, IVC, school districts, etc. . .

Imperial has attempted one tutor training, but there is very little interest. I've had 2 interested tutors ,but one said that she was no longer interested, and the other just hangs up on me :-( My fliers don't get taken either. And they are all over the library. My statistics are quite sad. Sorry.

So I'm sure by now you all heard the good news that Brawley will be supplying everyone with LEARN polo shirts, I'm really excited about this!!!
I need a little help or actually suggestions. The polos will obviously have the logo embroidered on one side but do we want anything else on them? I know Norma requested her name stitched on the opposite side and that may look nice but is there anything else? Maybe a quote underneath the logo?
Let's brainstorm this while I wait on everyone's sizes...

I was thinking maybe we can all post our favorite quotes, words of wisdom, or little inspirations...I think this would be a cool way to get to know eachother a little better, maybe pass on some words...
my favorite quote is "ancora imparo" which directly translated means "still I am learning" but is commonly used as or translated as "I am still learning"
I came across this a couple years ago and loved the idea.

I second the resource binders! I would also like to add: 1. debrief of the conference (what were some "aaahhhhaaa! moments") 2. Where are we on the newsletter? 3. Where are we on tutor recruitment? (any trainings or orientations coming up?) 4. Ideas for getting the word out about the program in terms of our roles and goals (percentages, tangible progress/success) 5. Ideas for tutor/learner recruitment in places we haven't tapped into yet (prisons, rehab homes...) 6. If that isn't enough....how 'bout a tutor/learner book club? :D

Just some thoughts, hopefully we can get a small discussion going...

In my mind, there is little of more value than teaching someone to read. When we do this, we provide them with the keys to the world: a way to move up in their work, a chance to open a book and be transported to other places or share the thoughts of others, the chance to be self-sufficient, in this an information society that requires reading to succeed. Kudos to all of you are giving the gift of reading.
